Discover the advantages of oil heating

27 2015 Author: Marlene Gray

Heating Oil (also known as Kerosene, 28 Second Burning Oil, Central Heating Fuel and Home Heating Oil) is a liquid fuel product used for central heating and in some cases for AGA ovens. Home heating oil is purchased in bulk and stored in a fuel tank usually located outside of the property where it is piped straight to a heating oil boiler.

If you've just moved into a property, the type of oil you will need is determined by the type of heating system already installed in the house. If your boiler or tank is not labelled clearly, ask the previous owner what type was used. If they can't help, a technician registered with Oftec (the oil-fired industry trade association) should be able to tell you.

There are many advantages to using home heating oil. If you’re not sure whether or not it is the right choice for you, here are some of its many benefits for you to consider:

  • Home heating oil is competitively priced. Here at Nicholl Oils we even have a price pledge promise where we will endeavour to beat or match any other quote you may get.
  • Home heating oil is not flammable at normal room temperature, unlike natural gas and LPG. Fuel oil is a very stable, non-explosive product, which addresses some of the safety concerns that surround other fuels.
  • You only ever pay for the amount of oil you use. There are no standing charges for oil heating and modern electronic oil tank contents gauges such as an oil watchman, allows for  monitoring of the amount of heating oil used.
  • Home heating oil is an environmentally responsible option. The majority of modern oil tanks consist of a tank within a tank, so in the event of a spillage, any surplus fuel will be contained within the outer tank, thus preventing any oil from spilling into the environment.
  • Kerosene is highly refined, making it extremely energy efficient.  Oil burns 400 degrees hotter than natural gas or electricity, so oil-heated homes heat up quickly. Modern condensing boilers have energy efficiency ratings in excess of 95%, independently acknowledged as more efficient than alternative fuel sources.
  • Figures from The Sutherland Tables dated July 2015 show that the annual cost to heat a 3 bedroom house (both space and water) with an oil fired condensing boiler is just £898, and £1279 for a 4 bedroom house. In comparison, a gas fired condensing boiler would have an annual cost of £1115 for a three bedroom house, and £1551 for a 4 bedroom house. Making kerosene substantially lower in price and providing a much more cost effective means of heating the home to the customer.
